After a break in 2020 due to covid, we were back for 2021 and determined to put on something special to make Welling look really festive again for Christmas 2021.
This year we purchased the largest Christmas tree that we could get for the tree pit on Welling corner and we were able to light up 42 lamp posts spreading out from Welling Corner on Bellegrove Road, Upper Wickham Lane and Welling High Street. We also had one lamp post at Welling Corner with a different light to all the others. It had an angel, in memory of all the loved ones we had lost over the last year.
Discover Welling loves to support the local community, so we also did something different this year had a ‘pay it forward’ scheme – for each lamp post that we lit up, we donated £12 to the Welling Salvation Army who then provided a Christmas dinner experience for someone.
For Christmas 2021 in Welling, the Salvation Army aimed provide every family and individual in need with a gift and with a Christmas meal. The Christmas dinner experience meant that everybody got meat, veg, crackers, stuffing, things to nibble on and something nice to drink. With our 2021 Crowdfunder , you were able to help out two causes for the price of one, so we were able to light up 42 lives this Christmas with a Christmas dinner experience.
Bexley Council also gave a £2,200 grant for Welling Town Centre to help improve footfall, which was put towards the festive event with Christmas lights.
