After the success of the 2019 Welling Sparkle, we were really looking forward to organising the sparkle again in 2020, but then COVID hit. With so many town centre shops having been closed for months earlier in the year, we went online only with our Crowdfunding campaign and did not directly ask businesses for donations. Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, we were really pleased that we were still able to raise enough funds to light up 38 lamp posts and we were even able to get a Christmas tree and banner for Welling Corner. We also created a Christmas scene in the flower border at the cannon with some small Christmas trees and festive ornaments, which were all still present and are now packed away ready to be used again next Christmas.
After initially thinking we would be able to have a festive market again, lockdown 2.0 in November meant that this was not now possible. We were still keen to mark the occasion of the Christmas lights coming on though, so the Mayor arranged to come and make a brief appearance to see the lights and managed to disappoint a child who thought he was Father Christmas!
We were pleased that we were still able to get Welling looking festive over the Christmas period even though the sudden lockdown 3.0 meant that most of the shops had to remain closed throughout this period.
